Heights
About
Heights is a narrative focused 3D adventure game. You play as a young artist in search of a sense of direction and inspiration. Following the passing of your grandfather, you find yourself adrift in a dream-like skyscape on a hot air balloon surrounded by pointy mechanical fish. You must keep your ship afloat while exploring and collecting items. All of this is in an effort to upgrade your ship to the point that it may brave the storm clouds looming above in order to chart a course back to solid ground.
Heights was created by Team Rabbit for the Academy of Interactive Entertainment's Major Production project. Major Production acts as a student final in which teams of around ten students are assembled from various disciplines. Disciplines include: Game Art, Programming, and Game Design/Production(this ones me). Each team was tasked with developing a game over the course of four months. I wore multiple hats throughout development, but focused on level and world building. Heights was a unique and ambitious project but resulted in an obscene amount of personal growth for me as a game developer. I was faced with a plethora of design challenges throughout and found myself stronger at the end of each milestone.

Level Design Showcase
I was the sole level designer for Heights. I was in charge of the core design revolving around 5 Islands/Levels, and the players ship(Which has 2 floors). We ended up scrapping the fifth level, but you can view my process pics on the rest here. There you'll also see early blockouts of the others .

Hub Island:
The player lands here first and meets the Tinkerer. Throughout gameplay they will return to the Hub for upgrades. The Hub has two collectable story pages, and a spyglass for viewing far off islands. There is also a lot of Box and Pufferfish "puffing" about.

The Rift:
The Rift is inspired by dangerous sea rocks, known for recking ships. Supposedly a great wind would carry sky vesells across the jagged stones
Here you will find an engine for your ship, two more collectable pages, another spyglass, some Rockfish, and a few Sailfish. This section teaches the player about hooklatches, which can pull you to a far away location. There are even a few to help you get back to your ship!

Old Fishing Hole:
This is your grandpa's favorite fishing spot. Once a year, sailfish come to the region and perform a mating ritual in which they chase one another in a circle. This typhoon spins the above island, which have been tied together. Here you'll find a fishing shack, interactable bridges, more collectables, and yet another spyglass(This one is actually there to help you find a secret).

Jelly Rock:
This Lush Island features a great tree, which inexplicably attracts Jellyfish. Here you will find a cosy lighthouse(meant to prevent people from collapsing into the Rift). You will also find a tree house used by the Tinkerer to test a device that repels electricity. This spot also has one of the best spyglasses if I do say so myself.
