What I'm Doing
Bamboo is a single-player, Top-down, Rogue-like, Deckbuilder. You play as a non-binary hero who finds themselves trapped in an ever-shifting forest, on the hunt for the man that killed your family. In Bamboo, the player interacts with the world by playing cards. Different cards will allow the player to move, attack, and defend. As the player progresses, they will be able to choose new cards to add to their deck, effectively changing their potential for each encounter. This game is called Bamboo because that is one of its primary focuses. Bamboo is a key element in the overall aesthetic, game feel, and mechanics.
-
Built and Balanced over 60 prototype cards, items, and artifacts.
-
Designed core game systems, including a rogue-like economy, and random generation system.
-
Created over 20 interchangeable level/encounter layouts, along with a boss fight.
-
Designed and iterated on 8 prototype enemy types, integrating enemies into one of three unique factions, and balancing them mechanically to interact interestingly and intuitively alongside one another. This included designing enemy-specific AI, and character lore.
-
Prototyped and playtested, utilizing paper prototyping tools, then programs such as Table Top Simulator to test remotely.
-
Authored Design Documentation big and small, working directly with my team to effectively convey the information they needed in a method best for them.
-
Lead Scrum and project discussions, as well as task management, and scheduling.
Bamboo is an in-progress indie game, built by a team of three, called Game Bois Inc. On Bamboo, I act as the Lead Designer/Producer. When we started with Bamboo, I wanted to create something with an alluring focus element. We want players to say, "Have you heard of that game with all of the Bamboo?" "Oh, you mean Bamboo?" Though it may seem simple, building the game and its mechanics to feature this core element has been a fantastic creative constraint! So far we are moving from our pre-production phase to developing our prototype, so make sure to ask me about it!
